How the numbers are worked out

The yearly price is paid up front, so stopping early does not make it cheaper. Monthly payments stop when you cancel.

Before you pay for a year

  • Check the refund terms. Whether you can get a refund, and for how long after paying, depends on the service. How subscription refunds work.
  • Start monthly if you are unsure. A few months of monthly billing cost a little more, but tell you whether the tool earns a year.
  • Put the renewal in your calendar. A yearly charge comes once and is easy to forget. The free trial reminder also works for a trial that turns straight into a yearly plan.

Questions

How do I know if a yearly plan is worth it?

Divide the yearly price by the monthly price. The answer is how many months the two plans take to cost the same. If it is under 12 and you will keep the service longer than that, the yearly plan is cheaper; if you might stop sooner, paying monthly is. If it is 12 or more, twelve monthly payments cost no more than the yearly price, so paying yearly saves nothing.

Why does the discount look different on pricing pages?

Both ways of counting are used. With $12 a month or $120 a year, the $24 saving is about 17% of twelve monthly payments, or 20% of the yearly price. This calculator shows the saving against twelve monthly payments.

Do I get money back if I cancel a yearly plan early?

It depends on the service. Google Play, for example, keeps a canceled subscription running for the time you have already paid and says you may be eligible for a refund only in some cases. So the calculator counts the full yearly price even if you stop early.

Is anything I enter saved?
