How to avoid being charged after a free trial

When a free trial ends, the paid plan can start on its own and charge your card. To avoid that, find the exact end date and price, cancel where the trial is billed before the deadline, and check your statement afterward.

When exactly does my free trial end?

Look it up where the trial is billed, since that is also where you cancel it. You need two things: the day the trial ends and the price you'll pay after it.

  • Started in an iPhone or iPad app: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, then tap the trial.
  • Started in an Android app: go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, signed in to the Google Account you used for the trial.
  • Started on a website: open the billing or account page on that site. For a Microsoft 365 trial, for example, Microsoft says to look for the Expires on date under the subscription at account.microsoft.com/services.

Write both down. On Google Play, the first billing period begins when the trial ends, and you're charged the amount in your subscription terms. If you can't find the date, check the confirmation email from the day you signed up.

How far ahead should I cancel a free trial?

Cancel at least a day before the trial ends. The official deadline depends on who bills you:

Canceling a day or two early leaves room for time zones and busy days. On Google Play, uninstalling the app does not cancel the trial.

Do I lose access if I cancel during a free trial?

It depends on the service. Some let you use the rest of the trial after you cancel. Others end it as soon as you cancel.

  • YouTube TV says that after you cancel, you can still use it until the end of the free trial period.
  • Spotify says that if you cancel during a zero-priced free trial, your account switches to its free service immediately.
  • Google Play says that in certain jurisdictions you can choose between canceling with immediate effect, which ends your access, and canceling at the end of the current billing cycle.

If you already know you won't keep it, cancel now anyway. Losing a few trial days is better than paying for a plan you didn't want. On Apple, a canceled subscription has no Cancel button or shows an expiration message in red text, so you can check that it worked.

How do I remember to cancel a free trial in time?

Set a reminder for a day or two before the trial ends, on the day you sign up. The free trial reminder works out the end date and the last day to cancel from the start date and trial length, then lets you add a reminder to your calendar.

Put the price and where to cancel in the reminder, so the decision takes a minute. Google Play also emails you when a trial is about to end, but treat that as a backup.

Which card should I use for a free trial?

Use a card you control and check yourself, then watch for the first charge.

  • Pick a card whose statements you read. A shared card, or an old one you rarely check, makes a surprise charge easy to miss.
  • If your bank or card app can alert you to new charges, turn that on before the trial ends.
  • Check the account the day after the trial was due to end. If a charge shows up after you canceled, contact whoever billed you.
  • Keep proof that you canceled, such as the confirmation email or a screenshot.

On Google Play, a hold can show up before the charge itself. Google says an authorization hold may be placed on your payment method up to 48 hours before the next renewal period, or up to 5 days in India or Brazil. Canceling before the next billing cycle begins removes it.

What if I was already charged after a free trial?

Cancel the subscription first so it doesn't charge you again, then ask whoever billed you for a refund. A refund is not guaranteed.

  • Apple: sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com, choose I'd like to, then Request a refund. Pick a reason and the subscription, then submit. Apple says some purchases might be eligible, that eligibility can vary by country or region, and to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update.
  • Google Play: Google says it doesn't give refunds for most Google Play purchases, with some exceptions. Within 48 hours of the purchase you may be able to get one from Google Play; after that, Google sends you to the app's developer. To ask, go to play.google.com, click your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history, and click Report a problem for the order. Google says a decision usually comes within one day but can take up to four.
  • A service you pay on its website: contact its support and ask. Refund rules vary by service, so check its refund policy first.

How do I keep track of several free trials?

Keep every trial in one list with its end date, the price after it and where it is billed. Take each one off once you cancel it or decide to keep it. In Subskim, you can add a trial by hand or from a screenshot, and it shows in your renewal calendar flagged with the date it converts to a paid plan and the price.
